Histoire de la distillerie de Glenlivet
La distillerie de Glenlivet fut fondée en 1824 par George Smith et Peter Fraser à Upper Druming avec un seul alambique. George Smith fut le premier à prendre une License sous la nouvelle législation de 1824. La production initiale était de 50 gallons par semaine et augmenta à 100 gallons par semaine en 1826. En 1840, George pris en location une ferme à Minmore située à moins d’1 km des collines d’Upper Drumin.
En 1850, George Smith acquis la location de la distillerie de Delnabo près de Tomintoul et y installa son deuxième fils, John Gordon Smith comme manageur et changea le nom de la distillerie en Cairngorm.
Une nouvelle distillerie fut construite à Minmore en 1859. Les anciennes distilleries de Upper Drumin et de Delnabo furent fermées et leurs alambiques transférés dans la nouvelle distillerie de Minmore. George forma une alliance avec son fils John Gordon et la distillerie opéra sous le nom de George & J. G. Smith. En 1864, 4 chais étaient attachés à la distillerie. A la mort de George Smith en 1871, son fils John Gordon repris la distillerie et enregistra la marque « Glenlivet ». En 1884, un cas de violation de l’usage de la marque Glenlivet fut porté en jugement et la court décida que seulement 1 seule distillerie pouvait légalement porté le nom « The Glenlivet ». Les droits sur la source de Josie furent acquis en 1890. La distillerie fut modernisée en 1894 avec un moteur à vapeur pour moudre le malt et en 1896 l’électricité fut implémentée et une deuxième pair d’alambiques ajoutée. Lors de la visite d’Alfred Barnard, la distillerie employait 50 personnes et la capacité des alambiques (Wash stills) était de 3700 gallons. Les alambiques était de style antique. En 1901, John Gordon Smith décéda et les droits furent passés à son neveu George Smith Grant. Le domaine, la ferme et la distillerie étaient estimés à £200.455. A cette époque, la production atteignait 250,000 gallons par année. En 1921, W.H. Smith Grant, le plus jeune fils du colonel George Smith devint le propriétaire de la distillerie. En 1951, la compagnie fut incorporée dans George & J.G. Smith Ltd, avec W.H. Smith Grant comme directeur. La compagnie acquerra les biens de la firme George & J.G. Smith pour £100,000 et l’année suivante, rejoignit J&J Grant de la distillerie Glen Grant pour former la compagnie publique The Glenlivet & Glen Grant distillers Ltd.
