Histoire de la distillerie de Bunnahabhain
Wiliam Robertson (de Robertson & Baxter), John Marshall, James Ford and James Greenless fondèrent la distillerie en 1881. Le site était vide, la construction d’habitations pour les employés, une salle de classe et un quai furent construits. Après un investissement initial de £30,000, le premier distillat coula en octobre 1882 et la production commença en janvier 1883. L’Islay Distillery Company Ltd réalisa un bénéfice de £10,000 l’année suivante. En 1887, la compagnie fusionna avec W Grant & Co pour former Highland Distillers. La distillerie fut agrandie en 1963 avec le nombre d’alambique passant de 2 à 4. La distillerie fut en sommeille entre 1932-36 et entre 1982-3. Le 10 avril 2003 la distillerie fut vendue à Burn Stewart Distillers (CL World Brands) pour la somme de £10mio. Le whisky produit à Bunnahabhain était robuste et tourbé jusqu’au début des années 1960. Ensuite le whisky devint légèrement tourbé avec la production de whisky tourbé expérimentée en 1991 (28 ppm) suivi d’un second lot en 1997 (38 ppm).
